Benefits of PC Hollow Sheet

Great Impact Resistance
The high-impact resistance makes it a favorite for engineers and architects to work on. They are very flexible and in turn, they have very high impact resistance which makes them ideal to work with.

Fire retardant
The PC hollow sheet are fire-resistant and flame retardant also. They can only catch fire at a temperature above six 630°C which makes them a very good quality of polycarbonate sheets. They are also firing retardants which means they can self-extinguish the fire. It concludes that even if the temperature is 630°C or more the fire will not spread.

Weight
The hollow polycarbonate panels are very light weighted. They are eight times lighter than the normal glass but have the same width as it. They do not require heavy external structures to support them, they support themselves. That is why they are cost-effective and do not need heavy machinery and labor.

Weather resistance
The PC hollow sheet are weather resistant. They can resist every kind of weather even if it is extremely cold or hot. That's why they are used in both interior and exterior of the building. They do not change themselves with the changes in environmental conditions.

Easy to install
The PC hollow sheet are fairly very easy to install as compared to the traditional building materials. They can be bent into different shapes and used according to the requirements.

Light conduction
The PC hollow sheet have an outstanding ability for light transmission. These panels are available in a customizable variety. The light transmission depends upon the width and thickness or size of polycarbonate sheets

What are the Applications of PC Hollow Sheet

Greenhouses
Agricultural greenhouses are said to be one of the first use of hollow polycarbonate sheets. The hollow polycarbonate sheets are now available in many varieties, twin walls, three walls, four walls, multi-wall and even honeycomb structures. They are used for different conditions, each has its own specific properties and is ideal for its suited environment conditions. Their thickness varies from 6 mm to 20 mm.

Canopies
Canopies are basically a structure suspended over a space to give shade or roof. It is a protective covering or shade. They also need light transmissions. Hollow polycarbonate sheets have an outstanding diffusion of light. They are ideal for carport canopies because of their resilient impact resistance, durability, eye-catching colors, light diffusion, environment-friendly nature, long-lasting warranty and many more characteristics. The hollow polycarbonate sheet used as the canopies usually has a thickness of 6mm-12mm.

Architectural lights
Big buildings construct and use static lighting belts to make a bright and appealing interior environment. The light pulls attention to the patterns, colors, and designs of a building. It is basically the true purpose of architecture. Lighting enhances our vision to visualize and appreciate the beautiful architecture. The hollow polycarbonate sheets are used as these lightning belts in gyms, halls, theatres and buildings with large spaces etc. Their cost is fairly high. The complex structure of hollow polycarbonate sheets such as all the multi-wall and honeycomb polycarbonate sheets are mostly used. The most common thickness is usually more than 15 mm.

Telephone booths and Garage entrances etc
Telephone booths are very small rooms or enclosed constructions having a public telephone in them to be used by people. They are enclosed because of privacy. They mostly only have space for one person. They are made of hollow polycarbonate sheets. They can be transparent and colored as well. The entrances of garages are also covered with hollow polycarbonate sheets. You may have seen underground garages in the huge buildings, they are very dark and needs light. The polycarbonate sheets are also used to provide a source of light as they have very good light conduction. Mostly the twin, four wall or honeycomb polycarbonate sheets are used with varying thicknesses of 8 mm to 15 mm.

Types of PC Hollow Sheet

Rectangular hollow polycarbonate sheet
Rectangular hollow polycarbonate sheet is the most commonly used shape of the solar panel. It got its name because its internal structure is rectangular. Rectangular solar panels, is generally 4-12mm thick, generally used in some temporary solar rooms, rain-proof eaves and other places where the requirements for the strength of the panel is not very high;Panel of medium thickness is a three-layer rectangular solar panel with a general thickness of 6-25mm. It is usually used in greenhouses in the central area where the environment is not very harsh. Its thickness can withstand the general rain and snow weather, and at the same time has a good insulation effect.

Honeycomb hollow polycarbonate sheet
The internal structure is like honeycomb shape, so it is called honeycomb solar panel. Compared with the rectangular solar panels, the strength of this kind of solar panels is higher. The thickness is generally 4-35mm. In the solar panels, it is a mid-range panel and is generally used for the roofs of commercial squares and industrial parks. The aesthetic effect of this kind of board is better than that of rectangular sunshine board.

Rhombus hollow polycarbonate sheet
The internal structure is like a rhombus. The strength of honeycomb panel is similar to honeycomb solar panel, and the thickness is generally 4-35mm. It is a mid-range solar panel used for ceilings such as commercial squares, factories, stadiums.

U-shaped lock hollow polycarbonate sheet
Referred to as the lock plate, the internal structure is also rectangular. The two sun panels are linked by a stainless steel card slot and a PC material U-shaped card strip like a lock, so it is called U-shaped locking sun panels. This kind of sun panels are generally used in government projects and high-end buildings. There are currently several thicknesses choices on the market( 8 mm, 10 mm, 18 mm and 20 mm).

PC hollow corrugated board
As the name suggests, the characteristic of this kind of sunshine board is wavy shape. It is divided into 40 type, 44 type, 80 type, 86 type according to the impassable wave height. It is widely used in factory buildings and with light weight, it reduces the load of the building.

PC Hollow Sheet Features

01/

Light transmittance
The light transmittance of PC hollow sheet can reach up to 89%, different colors and different transmittance.which is as beautiful as glass. UV-coated panels will not produce yellowing, atomization, and poor light transmission under sunlight. After ten years, the loss of light transmission is only 6%, the loss rate of PVC is as high as 15%-20%, and the glass fiber is 12 %-20%.

02/

Impact resistance
The PC sheet impact strength is 250-300 times that of ordinary glass, 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and 2-20 times that of tempered glass. There will be no cracks when falling two meters under a 3kg hammer. The reputation of “glass” and “sound steel”.

03/

Anti-uv
The PC sheet has an anti-ultraviolet (UV) coating on one side, and an anti-condensation treatment on the other side, which integrates anti-uv, heat insulation and anti-drip functions. It can block ultraviolet rays from passing through, and is suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from damage by ultraviolet rays.

04/

Light weight
The specific gravity is only half of that of glass, which saves the cost of transportation, handling, installation and supporting frame.

05/

Flame-retardant
The national standard GB50222-95 confirms that the PC sheet is flame-retardant grade one, that is, grade B1. The ignition point of the PC sheet is 580 degrees Celsius, and it will self-extinguish after leaving the fire. It will not produce toxic gas during combustion and will not promote the spread of the fire.

06/

Flexibility
Cold bending can be used on the construction site according to the design drawing, and it can be installed into an arch, semi-circular roof and window. The minimum bending radius is 175 times the thickness of the adopted sheet, and hot bending is also possible.

How to clean PC Hollow Sheet

Use a gentle detergent
Clean polycarbonate gently using warm water with a few drops of liquid detergent and a microfiber cloth. Put plenty of water in your bucket so that you can rinse the cloth frequently. This prevents any dirt and grit from scratching the polycarbonate.

Use soft materials to clean polycarbonate
Using a soft, clean microfiber cloth means that any dirt particles will be trapped in the fibers so they will not scratch the polycarbonate. Rinse out the cloth frequently.

Clean polycarbonate regularly
Depending on the application, we advise cleaning polycarbonate regularly. For a polycarbonate roof, this will mean about once or twice a year. If you notice any black or green deposits appearing, clean the panels as soon as possible or the material may become stained.

Don't use harsh chemicals to clean polycarbonate
Chemical cleaning agents such as white spirits and Windex are not recommended for cleaning polycarbonate. These harsh chemicals are not effective as they will not dissolve particles of dust and sand and as these particles are moved back and forth over the surface by your microfiber cloth, the surface will become scratched. Never use thinners, benzene or acetone as these chemical cleaning agents will soften the polycarbonate. They will also leave a permanent haze on the surface.

Don't use a pressure washer or scouring pads
You might be tempted to use a pressure washer to clean a polycarbonate greenhouse or patio roof but don't! The blast of water under high pressure will damage the surface of the polycarbonate. If your roof is very dirty, use an ordinary garden hose to rinse off any loose debris then clean the panels as described above. Scouring pads should be avoided as they will leave scratches.

How to Maintain PC Hollow Sheet

Regular Cleaning
Maintaining the transparency and aesthetics of polycarbonate sheets requires routine cleaning:Gentle Cleaning Solution: Use a mild soap or a designated polycarbonate cleaner mixed with water to clean the surface. Avoid abrasive cleaners and brushes that can scratch the sheet.Soft Cloth or Sponge: Gently wipe the surface with a soft cloth or sponge. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue.

Preventing Scratches
Polycarbonate sheets can be prone to scratching, so take precautions to minimize damage:Soft Bristle Brush: Before using a cloth, gently brush off any loose debris or dirt to prevent scratching during cleaning.
Microfiber Cloth: When wiping the surface, use a microfiber cloth to reduce the risk of scratches.

UV Protection
UV radiation can degrade polycarbonate sheets over time, leading to yellowing and reduced impact resistance:UV-Protective Coating: Consider using polycarbonate sheets with built-in UV protection or apply a UV-resistant coating to prevent degradation.Regular Inspection: Periodically inspect the sheets for signs of UV damage, such as discoloration or brittleness.

Repairs and Replacements
In case of damage or wear, it's essential to address issues promptly:
Minor Scratches: Use a plastic polish or a specialized scratch remover to minimize the appearance of minor scratches.Cracks or Breaks: Larger cracks or breaks might require professional repairs or replacements to maintain the structural integrity.

How Shall We Check The Quality Of Pc Hollow Sheet

● Pinch the sheet and check hardness. Good quality pc hollow sheet will be harder; otherwise, the sheet will be soft, brittle, and easy to break.

● Tear off the protective film and observe sheet bubble situation. Good quality pc hollow sheet made of 100% virgin material will be with less bubbles. There will be more bubbles for pc hollow sheet made of recycled raw material.

● Observe sheet transparency. PC hollow sheets made of virgin material will be brighter and with high light transmission. PC hollow sheets made of recycled material will be darker and with worse light transmission.

● Look at the pc hollow sheet lower wall thickness. Good quality sheet is with higher thickness and more raw material usage. For large-scale projects, we can choose one sheet and measure its weight to identy the purity of the material.

● Check the flexibility. Good quality pc hollow sheet is easy for bending and no breakage.

FAQ

Q: How do you seal the ends of polycarbonate sheets?

A: Apply Aluminium Tape to the top exposed ends of the sheets. Apply Anti-Dust Tape to the bottom exposed ends of the sheets. Measure the width of your polycarbonate sheet. Where required, cut the sheet closure to match the size using a Hack Saw or Chop Saw.For polycarbonates, a circular saw can satisfactorily cut through any thickness above 0.125 inches but below 0.5 inches. So if you want to cut a thin 0.0625 inches- 0.0937 inches polycarbonate using a circular saw, it is advisable that you use a hollow ground panel blade with at least 10 teeth per inch.

Q: Which side of polycarbonate sheet goes up?

A: Polycarbonate sheets only have one UV protected side so it is important that when installing them that side faces outwards towards the sun. If installed upside down there is a discolouring and brittleness risk. The transparent polycarbonate sheets are protected against UV rays and are highly resistant to their impact. They are invariable up to 120 degrees celsius and hence maintain an exceptional surface and transparency. It is an ideal choice when you want maximum sunlight to come in without being harmed by its rays.

Q: What is the best sealant for polycarbonate sheets?

A: Securbond LMN Silicone Sealant
When installing polycarbonate sheets always use Securbond LMN Silicone Sealant. The Securbond LMN is specially designed to be a neutral cure which makes it suitable for both Axgard solid polycarbonate and Axiome Multiwall polycarbonate sheets.

Q: Does polycarbonate crack when cut?

A: Its heat resistant properties mean that it can be cut with standard power tools with no cooling required under standard machining conditions. The durability of polycarbonate also makes it reluctant to splinter or crack when cut.You can use an ordinary iron drill or HSS drill bit to drill holes in polycarbonate. Position the drill perpendicular to the polycarbonate and run the drill at medium speed immediately. Don't use too much pressure but let the drill do the work. It's important to use a drill that is not brand new but is still sharp.

Q: Can I cut polycarbonate sheet with utility knife?

A: Polycarbonate is a type of plastic that is commonly used to make or modify window panes. It almost always comes in sheets, and is fairly easy to cut. Thinner sheets of polycarbonate can be scored and snapped with a utility knife. You can use a circular saw to make straight cuts on thicker sheets.

Q: What is the life expectancy of a polycarbonate sheet?

A: The lifespan of polycarbonate sheets will vary depending on a few factors, including the quality of the material, the type of installation, and the climate in which it is used. However, in general, polycarbonate sheets can last for 20 years or more.It can be formed without breaking or cracking at room temperature. Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate can undergo large plastic deformations without breaking or shattering. Because of this characteristic, it can be processed and molded at room temperature using sheet metal processes, such as bending on a brake.

Q: What is the gap between polycarbonate sheets?

A: Top Tip: if you are starting with a wall bar make sure there is an approx. 9mm gap between the base bar and wall to allow for the top clip. 7. Allowing for an expansion gap of approximately 2mm between the polycarbonate sheets and Snap down glazing bars line the base bars up.Polycarbonate sheets expand in hot weather and. contract in cold. It's important to pre-drill fixing holes to. allow for this thermal movement.

Q: What weakens polycarbonate?

A: Substances such as: Ethylene chloride, chloroform, tetrachloroethane, m-cresol, and pyridine can greatly affect polycarbonate, and in many cases partially dissolve it.So to smooth out serrated, rough, and rugged polycarbonate edges, buffing works best. To be precise, you should use wheel buffing.Compared to polycarbonate, acrylic has a higher tensile strength and UV resistance. Acrylic is less expensive than polycarbonate and is commonly used as a suitable alternative when impact resistance is not a key factor.

Q: What is the best bonding agent for polycarbonate?

A: The most commonly recommended way to fuse polycarbonate is with methyl methacrylate since it creates a strong, resilient bond. Some users have found that if they try to mechanically pull polycarbonate apart, the unaltered polycarbonate will break before the bond will!

Q: What caulk is compatible with polycarbonate?

A: Silicone
Plastic and Polycarbonate Silicone is a transparent, quick-setting caulk that provides a watertight seal and permanent flexibility. With its 100% silicone formula, this caulk offers outstanding adhesion and is ideal for use on Lexan sheets and with most plastic materials.

Q: What will stick to polycarbonate?

A: Polycarbonate glue, which is also called polycarbonate cement or polycarbonate epoxy, can be used on any material that is made up of polycarbonate. This won't be the bonding agent you reach for when fixing wooden furniture or glass! It is designed to bond well to all polycarbonates and offers incredible strength.

Q: Can you cut polycarbonate with a Dremel?

A: Bend the the polycarbonate down which is hanging over the edge of the table and it should break at the score line. We use a dremel but it creates jagged edges because the in and out method we need to use to prevent it from melting.

Q: What causes polycarbonate to become brittle?

A: PC is an amorphous substance that becomes plastic on heating and hardens on cooling. Because it is a thermoplastic polymer, this process is repeatable. Usually, thermoplastic materials melt at relatively high temperatures; as they cool to a temperature below the glass transition temperature, they may become brittle.

Q: Can you drill polycarbonate?

A: Yes, however, you are best to pre-drill pilot holes in polycarbonate sheets are they expand and contract with temperate changes. If you screw straight through without pre-drilling it allows no scope for expansion and the sheets may end up warping and flexing.

Q: Can you sand polycarbonate?

A: Start with grit 200, followed by 400 and 800. Sand lightly and be careful not to apply too much pressure. Finally, use waterproof sandpaper, grit 2000 or 2500. Then start to machine polish.Cut polycarbonate with a variety of common hand-held and table-mounted sawing equipment. Fine tooth hollow ground blades and triple chip carbide blades are the best choices for producing a good quality finish. For thin gauge sheet 1/16" -3/32" thick, use hollow ground panel blades with 10-12 teeth per inch.

Q: How do you join two pieces of polycarbonate?

A: There are two methods of bonding pieces of polycarbonate effectively, one being the use of an epoxide glue (Epoxy), which is relatively straightforward and not at all dissimilar to glueing any other two materials together; and the other being fusing the two together.Supported sloped stacking is recommended, but sheets may be stacked up to 3' high on a flat, even, supported surface.

Q: How much overlap on polycarbonate sheets?

A: Start with the lower sheets first, keeping the openings where the sheets overlap away from prevailing wind. Allow an overhang of 50mm into the gutter. Overlaps will differ between profiles, corrugated sheets have an overlap of 1 1/2 corrugations and greca profile has just one overlap.

Q: How far can polycarbonate overhang?

A: Cut aluminum profiles to length, allowing for overhangs of up to 100mm at each end. An overhang of minimum 50mm over the end-purlin into the gutter is recommended. Cut panels to length, 20mm shorter then aluminum profiles for expansion allowance.

Q: What is an alternative to polycarbonate sheets?

A: If you are interested in clarity and light transmittance, acrylic sheets will outperform polycarbonate sheets. On the other hand, if you are looking for high impact resistance, polycarbonate sheeting is the obvious choice. Even though each plastic can share the same form, they will function very differently.

Q: Do I need to seal polycarbonate panels?

A: Does Polycarbonate Roofing sheet tape always need to be installed? No! Installing Filter Tape/ Breather Tape/Anti Dust Tape is completely optional. Many installers prefer not to use the Polycarbonate Sheet Tape nowadays as by correctly sealing your Endstop Bar you should be able to get the perfect seal required.Maybe you've experienced the kind of damage that hail can do when it strikes a roof. But polycarbonate, which has 30 times the strength of acrylic and 250 times as much impact resistance as glass, is perfect for outdoor structures. Bring on the elements, a polycarbonate roof can handle whatever the skies dish out!
